Types of Brochures

Along with sell sheets, inserts, flyers, postcards, and booklets, brochures are among the most versatile promotional materials businesses can use. You can mail them, hand them out, take them to trade shows, leave them in a stack - you name it. They are the jacks-of-all-trades of promotional materials.

Types of Brochures

Brochures are single or multi-sheet documents usually printed in one or two colors or in full four-color process.

Single-sheet brochures are designed on one double-sided sheet of paper in an 8.5x11", 8.5x14", 11x17", or 13.5x19.5" size. When folded in half, these sheets become four-page brochures. If when folded in thirds, they become six-paneled (three in back, three in front) brochures.

Multi-sheet brochures are larger documents using several double-sided sheets of paper in an 8.5x11", 8.5x14", 11x17", or 13.5x19.5" size. When folded in half, each sheet represents four pages. Therefore, a self-cover, eight-page 8.5 x 11 brochure represents two 11x17s folded down to 8.5x11, then nested and stitched together.

Designing Brochures

When designing brochures, sell sheets, inserts or flyers you will need to take into account the paper stock, the colors, and the folds of your brochure. Using a coated stock will increase the glossiness of your brochure and make them look more professional.

Because of the complexities of designing brochures due to the presence of folds, you may want to work with a professional designer or use the in-house design services of your printer.

Printing Options

When printing brochures, you have two options: digital printing and conventional offset printing.

With conventional offset printing, you will get the highest standard of print quality. With digital printing, you will get a very high standard of print quality and you can order much smaller quantities of your brochures, in full-color, on demand. If you want to print only 100 brochures, or 50, or only 10, digital printing allows you to do this in bright, beautiful color.

Because digital printing allows you to print brochures in such short runs, many businesses are starting to customize their brochures to different target audiences. This is called versioning, customization, or segmented printing.

Online Printing

The process of ordering your brochures has also gotten easier. You can choose to order directly from a local commercial or quick print shop, or you can order online from a printer. By ordering your brochures online, you can place your order right from your desk.

Online ordering can save you money and time. Not only can you order right from your desk, but online printing contains inherent efficiencies that allows printers to offer you a discount on their standard pricing.
